NEPA Process

At the beginning of any new project, we have a responsibility to assess how our activities will affect the environment. This process falls under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Using the flow chart (Appendix A of FESHM 8060, shown below), you should be able to determine what steps you would need to complete. If your activity is routine maintenance, it may be excluded under the Generic Categorical Exclusion (other exclusions are described in Appendix C of FESHM 8060).

July Winners!!

Text Box: H1N1 Flu
An “All Hands” email was recently sent out to update you on the status of this virus. It is likely that the fall flu season could show a rise in H1N1 flu cases, which could result in a significant number of our fellow employees being out sick. To prepare, it is recommended that each Section update their call list.

For more information on the H1N1 Influenza virus, check out the websites below:

Hand-free phone devices found to be no safer than handheld phones

The National Safety Council researched the use of cell phones while driving, and has come to the conclusion that there is little difference between the risk of using hands-free devices and using handheld phones. The study has confirmed that any form of cell phone use is a distraction that will detract from the brain’s ability to focus on driving safely.

Use of either hands-free or handheld phones is equally dangerous because both:
Cause more accidents and driving errors
Impair reaction times
Slow down overall vehicle speed

Text Box: Phasing Out HCFC Refrigerants
Hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are refrigerants used in our air conditioners, refrigerators, etc., the most common being R-22. The U.S. is in the process of phasing out these refrigerants, as they are harmful to the Earth’s ozone layer. Since these refrigerants are being phased out, you will need to consider your options when servicing, repairing or replacing your existing air-conditioner.

Beginning in 2020, R-22 will no longer be produced or imported. You can still use R-22 supplies, but there will be no more production of this refrigerant. This phase-out time is meant to give you ample time to replace your air conditioning units with more ozone-friendly equipment— when your air conditioner becomes old, inefficient or ineffective.

Text Box: PPD Injury Report

7/15/09 – Employee was walking through a restroom doorway and her left foot contacted the door stop on the bottom of the door. First aid only.

7/22/09 – While grinding steel plates, a subcontractor hit burr with an angle grinder, causing the grinder to jump off of the steel plate. The result was the grinder contacting his left knee and causing a 1" laceration. Treated at local clinic, where 6 sutures were required to close the laceration, and prescription medication was given (for pain and antibiotic). Injury is recordable, not DART.  Procedures were not followed as prescribed by the workstation set up.
